Simple tips for superior cold weather skincare

SIMPLE TIPS FOR SUPERIOR COLD WEATHER SKINCARE

The cold weather doesn’t have to mean the end of gorgeous glowy skin.  Dry skin is almost inevitable in the cooler months however we have a few tips to help keep your complexion smooth and plump.  Winter changes the pH balance in our skin and conditions such as dermatitis and eczema can also flare up.  The combination of heating inside, harsh weather outside and decreased oil production can lead to dehydrated, dry and lacklustre skin. Remember dry skin is lacking oil and dehydrated skin is lacking water so keep in mind that your body still needs to stay hydrated from the inside out so don’t forget to keep drinking plenty of water.

TIP 1  CHOOSE A CREAM OR OIL CLEANSER

Opt for gentle cleansers and exfoliators.  Skin that lacks hydration needs to be treated delicately. Cleansers are designed to remove make up, dead skin cells, oil and dirt from the skin, but with the colder weather already leaving your skin feeling parched and deprived of natural oils and moisture you are best to swap your more active cleanser for a cream or oil counterpart.  These are not only gentler on the skin but have added moisturising benefits.

Our Picks:
Medik8 Gentle Cleanse  – ultra gentle and infused with Rosemary Oil (an antioxidant) and Glycerin (a natural humectant found in the skin which enhances skin’s barrier function) $44
Medik8 Cream Cleanse  – a velvety cleanser infused with natural shea butter which effortlessly melts down impurities for a refreshed complexion $44

Jane Scrivner Nourishing Cleansing Balm (contains rganic joboba oil and beeswax, Vit A, B, D & E, EFA’s, omega’s 6 & 9) a powerhouse of organic actives to replenish and restore barrier function $66

TIP 2  STEP UP YOUR SERUMS

For serious skin hydration you need to look at including serums in your winter skin care routine. Serums are packed with high concentrations of active ingredients which are instantly absorbed deeply into the skin.  For instance, cleaners and daily face creams tend to contain between 5 and 10% of active ingredients, while a serum can contain up to 70% active ingredients! This translates into more targeted and meaningful results.

Our Picks:
Medik8 Hydr8 B5 Intense – packed full of actives including hyaluronic acid and B5 hydrates the skin from the deepest levels for a supple and nourished complexion. $99
Medik8 C-Tetra Intense – good for dry or dehydrated skin (Vit C, Vit E, Vit F, Squalane & Maracuja oil and Ginseng) – intensely nourishing and brightening $140

TIP 3  SEAL IN YOUR SERUMS WITH A HYDRATING MOISTURISER

Whether you have dry skin, oily skin, sensitive skin – whatever skin type you are trying to manage, you need to make sure your moisturiser is packed full of hydrating ingredients.

Our Picks:
Medik8 Advanced Day Total Protect – a lightweight anti-aging moisturiser with sunscreen,  the ideal moisturiser for day time use to seal in those serums $119

TIP 4  SLIP, SLOP, SLAP

Yes you should be wearing sunscreen all year round, especially in our Australian climate where sun emits damaging ultraviolet (UV) radiation all year round, and its effects—even from incidental exposure—are cumulative. Think you’re protected because you’re cooped up inside for most of the day? Well, that’s just not the case. UVA rays are present—and relatively constant—every day of the year, and they are able to penetrate through clouds as well as glass. Meaning if your desk is next to a window, or you spend a lot of time driving, you shouldn’t forget a high-level, broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect you from unwanted pigmentation and fine lines. And the same goes for cloudy days with a low UV index.

The best sunscreen is the one that you are actually going to wear daily, and is at least 30+ SPF.

If you are using a chemical sunscreen then this needs to be applied before your moisturiser, if using a physical sunscreen this should be applied after your moisturiser.

Our Picks:
Medik8 Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ physical sunscreen which offers long-lasting protection from both UVA and UVB rays $69
Mesoprotech SPF 50+ – a combination of chemical and physical sunscreens to suit all skin types, from tinted to matt finish $89
Aspect 50+ a high protection broad spectrum sunscreen from $30

TIP 5  GET EXTRA LIPPY

Winter can be an especially brutal time for your lips. It’s no surprise when you think about why. The cold air, the chilling wind and dry, heated air inside all conspire to make your lips dry and tight.  Add to that the fact that the skin on your lips is 4 to 5 times thinner than the skin on your face and contains no sweat glands or hair follicles like the rest of the body, they therefore have no natural protection to the elements.

Choose the most emollient balm you can find — look for ingredients such as beeswax, shea butter, cocoa butter, or oils such as almond or jojoba to help lock in moisture and soften and protect lips. A good quality lip balm will be your best friend in the colder months.

Our Picks:
Jane Scrivner Lip Balm – 100% Organic, moisturising and hydrating lip balm. Packed full of everything nourishing including beeswax, shea butter, coconut oil, wild peppermint and Vit A, E & F.  $22

Sugar&Butter Lip Exfoliation/Plumper – organic brown sugar gently exfoliates the lips & Shea Butter restores moisture to thirsty lips $60

TIP 6  NOURISH YOUR SKIN FROM WITHIN

Did you know that the Skin microbiome and gut microbiome are in constant communication with one another.  This influences physical skin health, mood and hormone balance.

Our Picks:

Miss Vitality Elixir Marine Collagen – comes in powder form and has a combination of Marine Collagen, essential nutrients Magnesium, Zinc plus the Antioxidant richness of Blueberries to help your cells repair and revitalise. The Elixir targets our gut health so we absorb better, plus nourishes our skin, hair, joints and bones. The Magnesium, Zinc and blueberries promote hormone balance. Mix a teaspoon in your smoothie, sprinkle over your yoghurt, or drink it as a quick shot in water $73.50

Miss Vitality Good Oil – Good Oil capsules bring you all the benefits of fish oil without the fish aftertaste, an ultra pure and ultra concentrated oil providing you the omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA. Assisting your skins inflammatory response and using fatty acids to act as a natural moisturiser to revitalise skin from the inside out – Good Oil supports your body to achieving clearer skin.  Reduces cellular inflammation and relieves symptoms of compromised skin $41

TIP 7  USE A HUMIDIFIER IN YOUR HOME

Dry air is the cause of dry skin, not cold air. Keep the air moist and your skin will get the moisture it needs to stay healthy.
The winter dry air sucks out the moisture from your skin, causing all kinds of problems, such as dullness, dryness, flaking, and premature aging.
An air humidifier is a great investment for keeping up the humidity in your home during the winter months.
