Warm Weather Skin Tips

Warm Weather Skin Tips

Summer is the season to kick back, relax outdoors and enjoy the warmer weather. At the same time, warm weather also brings a whole lot of skincare challenges like oily skin, breakouts and sun damage. You might start to wonder if you really need to even moisturise with the heat outside and with your skin producing more oil. Do you need to change your skincare routine to cope with the change in weather?

A solid routine should be applicable to all seasons and all climates. That said, there are a couple of changes one might consider when transitioning from cooler to warmer days.  If you are not wearing a winter coat, why should your skin? In the summer, in general, just like your wardrobe, your skincare may need to be a little more lightweight. The heat and humidity of summer means you can swap out a heavier cleanser (think cream or oil cleanser) in favor of a gentle, foaming or gel option.

To help lighten things up you could also consider switching to a combination moisturizer and sunscreen during the summer. A lightweight moisturiser with SPF of 30 or higher may be plenty for most people, as long as you’re applying a generous amount and reapplying every couple of hours as with a regular sunscreen. Thicker moisturisers can lead to clogged pores, inflammation, and acne; especially if you have acne-prone or oily skin, losing one skin-care step with a combination moisturiser/SPF can help keep skin clear.

Invest in a good Vitamin C.  Vitamin  is great year-round, but all the more important in the summer. Vitamin C helps prevent hyperpigmentation, improve the appearance of fine lines, and can help with collagen production. Layer a few drops on your skin between cleansing and moisturising.

Do not over exfoliate. Exfoliation can increase sun sensitivity by up to 45%. Since the process involves removing dead skin cells or the protective layers of the skin, the skin becomes more vulnerable to sun damage. So, make sure that you keep exfoliation minimal during the hot weather.  One to two times per week at most.  If you’re planning on being in the sun for extended periods, better to keep exfoliation even less. Just as important is to schedule it two to three days before spending long hours in the sun to give your skin time to heal. Don’t make the mistake of exfoliating the day before a day in the sun. Correctly timing your exfoliation will help avoid over-exfoliating and aggravating your skin.  Lastly, exfoliate in the evening and use products with acidic ingredients sparingly. Nighttime beauty rituals give your skin time to replenish whilst you catch a snooze.

Whether you’re a first time spray tanner or a seasoned spray tanner, here’s some tips to help you get the most out of your spray tan.

General info

  • The active tanning ingredient in your spray tan is DHA (Dihydoxyacone). The DHA stimulates the amino acids (protein) within the stratum corneum (the surface layer of the epidermis) to produce brown colour pigments known as Melanoidins.
  • DHA is a clear ingredient that can’t be seen when first sprayed onto the skin. This is why cosmetic bronzers are added and act as a colour guide so the technician can see where she is spraying.
  • Your skin will begin to produce the colour pigments (Melanoidins) within the first hour after spraying and this process will continue for up to 24 hours or longer. It is important not to get wet or exercise for the first 1 – 2 hours after application.
  • Note that the advised wash off time is the minimum required time to ensure the Melanoidin production has been effectively stimulated. The spray tan solution can however be left on the skin for longer if it is inconvenient to shower at this time, or if you desire a darker result.
  • Leaving the tan solution on for an extra 1-2 hours may achieve slightly darker results but it will not continue to add depth by leaving the product on for even longer. Although the tan depth will not be fully developed at the rinse off time, it will continue to process and deepen for the 24 hours following the spray tan application.

Before your tan prep

  • Exfoliate before your tan, either the day before or the morning of your tan. There are numerous ways to exfoliate your skin, we recommend a body scrub and/or an exfoliating mitt which can be used in the shower to help slough off the dead skin cells enabling the skin to absorb the tanning solution more effectively and evenly. Because spray tan solution reacts with the proteins in the outer, dead layer of our skin, this is the layer that we lose, so if we can start our tan with the freshest layer of skin possible its a win, win.
  • Shaving should be done 24hrs before the spray tan and we do prefer waxing to be done 24 – 48hrs before tanning just to give the skin a chance to calm down and to minimize the risk of irritation. Waxing should not be done after tanning as this will remove the tan. Shaving also shortens the life of your tan.
  • Bring lose and preferably dark clothing with you to put on after your tan to minimize staining of clothes. It’s also good to keep in mind that any tight fitting garments can remove the tan from the skin resulting in white patches, keep this in mind with footwear also, slip on shoes are preferable. During your tan you can wear disposable briefs we supply for you or you can wear your own underwear, again dark in colour to avoid staining. Jewellery should be removed and make-up removal is optional depending on whether you want your face sprayed or not.
  • Avoid using perfumes, deodorant and moisturiser before tanning as this can act as a barrier to the tan.
  • Have your hair tied up off your shoulders, and we do supply a cap you can wear, especially if you’re blonde to help protect the hair from possible staining.
  • Avoid exercise after the tan as sweating will remove the tan from the skin. Here’s your leave pass from dishes also after your tan, putting your hands in a sink of water will result in white hands and forearms.

Why do we ask you to complete a consultation form?

A consultation gives our technician the opportunity to gather information from you which is essential in designing the right tan to suit your requirements and expectations.  It allows us to see what tan treatments you have had previously and what has worked or not worked for you.  Would you like a light tan for your wedding, a natural medium tan or a very dark tan.  Do you have a time limit on when you need to wash off the tan….there are so many variables!

We also know that some supermarket products can cause the spray tan to go orange due to the sulphates, detergents and lack of pH balancing in the product. Products that have crushed shell and nut are too abrasive on the skin stripping not only the dead skin cells but the amino acids in the acid mantle of the skin. Shea butter in exfoliating products can form a barrier against a tan.

Do you use a body wash regularly? Again is it salon quality and pH balanced? Be particularly mindful of body wash products that have a moisturizer in them as it forms a barrier on the skin and the tan may not take as well as it should, or become patchy or wear off quickly.

What Shampoo and Conditioner do you use? – this is important as again sulphates and detergents in shampoo and conditioner can affect the spray tan and the acidity of the skin. Products with Silicon in them can form barriers over the skin especially on the shoulder where the shampoo and conditioner wash onto.

So as you can see a thorough consultation is essential in ensuring the best possible treatment outcome and it also ensures we have your favourite tan on record so you get a perfect result no matter which technician does your treatment!
